While I agree with many of the conclusions of your article, I'd have to disagree that putting together strategic alliances in the face of inevitable Chinese expansionism is a mistake. I have no doubt that China will look to expand its 'living space' in the future. I look to them attempting northward expansion as well as taking (or attempting to take) Taiwan.
If the US's policy is containment, how can that be worse than China's coming policy of expansion and empire? I think it would be criminal on the part of the US leadership to NOT try to counter China's plans. China is currently upgrading its technological and power projection capabilities and is expected to make significant progress by 2015. By 2020 China could feel that it is prepared to expand and hold its gains.
It will be the US who must stand against ANY attempts at expansion by China. I would expect them to try to bite off large chunks of Siberia and that would preclude a close alliance between China and Russia. I think it is more likely that they would more in this direction even before attempting to regain Taiwan since the US would be much less inclined to come to the aid of Russia than it would Taiwan.
I wonder if anyone has taken into consideration the amount of oil available as domestic supply to China and the US? We produce some 8 millionBPD vs Chinas 3 million. We of courseprefer foreign oil because why consume better quality anbd refined local stuff when you can make a killing on the foreign markets. I thouhg it was really strange to see our ranking as the third highest producing nation in the world. That said, keeping our war machine running would be easier for us than the chinese.
We are expecting Peoples Liberation Army soldiers in Australia one day. All through the Christian churches of Australia are visions and prophecies (since the mid-1970s) regarding an incursion from Australias north. The gateway to a collection of such visions/prophecies is via the book WHAT WILL BECOME OF AUSTRALIA 1974 by Jack Burrell.
Jacks book is at http://whatwillbecomeofaustraliajackburrell.blogspot.com/
Where America is initially, we dont know. Maybe she is distracted with other conflicts? My thoughts are that even now China plots the overthrow of Asia/Australasia and already has the guns and equipment for Revelation 9:16's 200 million soldiers.
See the KINGS OF THE EAST asian army.

Mao said in 1963, I think it was, that any day he wanted to he could foot 200 million soldiers.
The article has a distinct anti US and anti India tone to it.
Seems like some left i leaning politician who would rather kowtow to other's strength (read China). It is very typical of them
Australia has the most to fear from China if US is diminished. 20 mil Aussies will not be able to hold off even 1/10th of Chinese military.
Get some nuts man.
It's 2012 now. Fears of China invading Australia at this point are hyper-paranoid. What inane movies have you been watching down there? And China focusing northward on Russian territory? Where does that idea come from? Bullfrog's comment is the most sensible, despite the narrow 'Us' versus 'Them' language.
China is moving in various ways to secure resources around the world, more through alliances than brute military force. The 'incursion from Australia's north' might take the form of Chinese money buying Australian resources, with Aussies eager to sell.
The greedy international race for resources cannot continue, it's making the planet increasingly uninhabitable. Fukushima, anyone?
