Description: A man rinses soot from his face at the scene of a petrol pipeline explosion in Lagos, Nigeria, on December 26. At least 260 people were killed after a punctured pipeline caught fire. Thieves had tapped it to fill tankers with petrol for resale, and hundreds of people had gone to the scene to scoop up leaking fuel in plastic containers. Pipeline vandalism and fuel theft are common in Nigeria, the world's eighth largest exporter of oil, where most people live in poverty.

Comment by Jon Levy:
I would venture to suggest that this one was awarded a prize because of the contradictions present in it. The clean looking man, washing his face while wearing a colourful robe and holding a clean blue bucket, set against the dirty, smoky derelict scene in which he stands. Further contrasts are evident in the fire around his feet and the water in which he washed his face. How also, we might ask, does a man in sandals seem so oblivious to the fires at his feet. The more you look at it the more there is to find: the lone tree in the background, leaning like the man, being overcome by smoke; the charred upright plank of wood behind the man, another solitary figure that has been devastated by the fire and explosion. And above all of this the dark, black clouds loom large (though I feel they have been rather over-worked in Photoshop to appear so deep and rich). The image caption tells us about a massive event that has caused this scene, yet the image itself has managed to illuminate a single slice of life that we can relate these feelings to. The man is more than just a bystander or participant in the event. He is a symbol, with an outstretched hand across his brow, of the unimaginable power of events beyond his control and the pain and suffering the explosion has caused.
